How to Change a Disabled Person's Diaper Step By Step

If you are caring for a disabled person or an elderly person, then you are probably aware of the difficulties they may experience when trying to use the restroom on their own. It is often frustrating and embarrassing to them. Eventually, they may end up needing to use adult diapers. The diapers can help to avoid the frustrations of trying to use the restroom, and knowing how to properly change them will help to make the process less embarrassing and inconvenient for both you and the disabled person

1
Place a towel onto a flat surface, such as a bed or floor, and lay the disabled person on top of it.

2
Remove the person's pants and underwear completely and pull any other clothing completely away from the diaper area.

3
Remove the diaper from the person by detaching both side tabs. Leave the diaper in place.

4
Push the person's knees back towards their chest with one arm so that their bottom is raised.

5
Use your free hand to wipe the entire diapered area with wipes from front to back. You may need to use a few wipes to clean the entire area thoroughly.

6
Place the soiled wipes into the dirty diaper and fold it over. Throw the dirty diaper into the wastebasket.

7
Place a clean diaper into position with the tabs at the back, under the person, and lower their knees back down.

8
Apply diaper rash ointment or cream if necessary. Sprinkle powder over the entire area of skin that will be covered by the diaper.

9
Fold the front of the diaper up and secure it with the side tabs from the back. Replace the person's clothing.
