How to Potty Train at School

While most preschools require children to be potty trained to attend, some preschools are willing to accept a child who is in the midst of potty training. Potty training at school is more difficult than potty training at home, but it can be accomplished if ground rules are set and teachers are willing to support the child throughout the potty training process

1

Develop a joint plan. For potty training at school to be successful, the parents and teachers must agree on a plan. The plan should include how often the child will sit on the potty, where the potty will be placed, proper toileting hygiene and how accidents will be handled.

2

Provide the teachers with a reward system to reinforce the potty training progress. The reward system may include stickers or small toys.

3

Write notes. To coordinate the potty training process, both the teachers and parents can document the child's potty training progress in a notebook. Any concerns, issues, attempts and failures should be recorded.

4

Send extra clothing to school with the child. During the potty training process, accidents are bound to happen. For this reason, sending the child to school with extra sets of clothing is necessary. A plastic bag is a good idea, too, for the teacher to place the soiled clothing in.

5

Follow through at home. Consistency will help a child succeed in potty training. Be sure to implement a similar potty training plan at home so the child continues to progress and have potty training success.
